Which case are you getting?

Added by foft almost 7 years ago

Since the boards are almost ready, does everyone have their case ready.

Both Panos and I have an MHero S R case and it fits well into that. It is mini-itx standard so other cases should work. Please bear in mind that the sub-boards sits on top (so needs full height) and also sticks out the back on this prototype.

I have been eyeing this one...

I think the design on the front bears a resemblance to the fuji.

I guess you can make a custom sub-board for it so the cart can go in that nice door on the back. All the support chips are on the main board so the sub board is just plumbing.

I had been hoping to get a custom wooden case made. Unfortunately I couldn't convince him to sell me one - http://slipperyskip.com/page29.html

When this board is installed in a mini-itx case, is there a way that the front power switch on the case can toggle power to the board? Or do we still need to use the toggle switch on the main PCB?

RE: Which case are you getting? - Added by foft almost 7 years ago

We've set it up to reset the boards in general. Its a push to make switch I think rather than a toggle. So if you want to replace power you'll need to maintain the state with something!

I am considering this case:
https://www.akasa.co.uk/update.php?tpl=product/product.detail.tpl&no=181&type=Fanless%20Chassis&type_sub=Fanless%20OEM&model=A-ITC005-M1B#

I am a metal worker, so I will make a custom plate for the back of the case. My plans are, rather than using the provided daughter board, I will put the 4 joystick ports on the front panel next to the 2 USB ports. The SIO port, serial port, mic inputs, cart port, will be on the back panel. I'll have to do an extender cable of sorts to bring the PBI connector somewhere. Honestly though, I don't use PBI devices so it's not a major concern.

This was mine choice: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Chieftec-IX-01B-OP-Small-Factor-computer/dp/B00B5QY4SW
Professional quality, recommended if one haven't decided yet.

Very good. Not forget to kill the Chieftec logo in front. ;-)

I wait also to see the results from the try of Stephen.

I received my board and honestly, it looks awesome. But I was fool enough not to purchase a case when I was at the US, and now I have difficulties finding a bare case on my country. The mostly come with PSU and/or fan.

I understand board size is standard, even the I/O panel size is standard and it and should fit any mini-ITX case, right?

My only concern is the extra height when stacking the sub board. Or it still should fit any mini-ITX case?

I can get something like this: https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811156340
Or like this: http://www.thermaltake.com/products-model.aspx?id=C_00002373

Both seem too high, right? Otherwise the only smaller option I can find here is: http://www.sentey.com/es/ss5-2514

RE: Which case are you getting? - Added by foft over 6 years ago

Yeah those both seem large. This is the one Panos and I bought: https://www.minipc.de/en/catalog/il/1226

It should fit in any standard mini-ITX case. The standard mini ITX IO area is actually as defined by micro ATX. Note that there is a 'thin mini-itx' io panel standard which has less height. So, you need one with a 158.75mm x 37.34mm cutout.
See: http://www.formfactors.org/developer%5Cspecs%5CMini_ITX_Spec_V2_0.pdf and http://www.formfactors.org/developer/specs/matxspe1.2.pdf (page 15).

Where do you live?

RE: Which case are you getting? - Added by Stephen over 6 years ago

Well, I needed something quick and cheap. I ordered this https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01B575EMA/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Back plane needs modifying as the power switch is too far to the left of the PCB to clear the opening. It will also require quite a big cutout to allow the sub board to be mounted internally. I'm still trying to decide if I should mount it internally, or mount it to the top of the case. Problem with that, is the two large slots I'll have to cut to pull the ribbon cables through. I am very much leaning towards internally mounting this.

I'll post pics when I get it installed. This will not be my ultimate solution for this board. But I was not going to take it to a weekend show (VCFMW) as just a bare PCB.

OK - I did not have to do nearly the cuts to this case as I thought I would. I'm pasting a link to my Flickr album. Feel free to poke around - tons more Atari albums in there and some cool car stuff / welding I've done over the years.
