Use a real floppy drive?

Added by 8bitclassics almost 6 years ago

I have tried formatting a floppy and copying a disk in 4 different physical drive. It keeps erroring error 173 on formatting. I am just using DOS 2.5 in drive assigned to 1 off the SD card and then assigned a physical drive to all other drive #s while leaving equivalent drive # is the F12 settings area blank (except for #1 as mentioned that has DOS 2.5). No luck. Drives have been tested in my XE previously fine.

If you take the disk out of sdrive 1 does it then work?

Just been playing for 20 mins with aspeqt, my real 1050 and the internal drive.

Afraid I can't reproduce this. I suspect a bad SIO cable perhaps?

That said, what kind of drives are you using? I wonder if they are using different signals to the 1050.

One thought, the default OS is high speed patched and perhaps that conflicts with your drives. You could try using the standard one too.

I haven't gotten a chance to test on booting from one, but I have tested 3 1050 drives and a Indus GT drive. I was trying my XF551 that was working perfectly as well but for some reason won't power on now. I will do some more testing this weekend and pot again. I will try a couple different SIO cables and the speed was at the lowest.

Things you can try besides swapping the SIO cable:
- Check/change the power supplies : 1050 9v AC 2-3A. Indus GT (DC?), Eclaire XL 5v dc 1-2A
- Check the ribbon cables to the SIO board; one of mine got stuck on a header during transport.
- Check the floppy(s)

Did you get it working?

Been away, sorry. I plan on trying this weekend.

It might be worth starting from a simple setup. i.e. test a drive by itself as D1 without the internal sdrive. Before heading towards the full on 'n' external drives in combination with sdrive.
